Our Programs | Teen Leadership Program:
The Teen Leadership Program is designed to address the needs of our girls in their evolution into competent and active members of their communities in the following ways: - Develop positive attitudes and relationships with peers and caring adults to help them develop socially and succeed academically.
- Develop skills and attitudes needed to become leaders among their peers and in their communities.
- Keep teens connected, engaged, and nurtured during the pivotal ages of 15-17, to keep them on track, in school, and developing to their best potential.
- Tap into the positive experiences of teens who have attended SEED for several years and are eager to stay engaged with Girls Quest as they grow and give back to the younger girls in our programs.
In the program, qualified girls, ages 15 and up, participate in a series of cultural, educational, and leadership activities throughout the year. Teen Leaders commit to a three-year, year-round program, which includes serving as peer leaders each summer for the SEED Program at Camp Oh-Neh-Tah. They receive training in leadership, conflict resolution, and behavior modeling during the school year, in preparation for serving as peer leaders at SEED during the summer.
2009 Accomplishments
Through a grant from the William T. Grant Foundation, Girls Quest has made great progress in the codification of the Teen Leadership Program curriculum; Consultant Elizabeth-Williams Riley assisted in development and implementation of the codified program.
The number of girls applying to the program continues to increase with 32 girls participating in 2009.
Girls Quest was able to hire a part time, year-round Teen Leader Coordinator, who is a long-time participant in the SEED and Teen Leadership programs. Girls Quest has successfully been using technology (e.g. Facebook) to foster easier and better communication amongst the Teen Leaders. Developed a program structure that fosters leadership, communication and accountability; Teen Leaders have monthly meetings, devised the Teen Leader Council (President, Vice President and Secretary) and Teen Leader of the Month for the Teen Leaders who shows the most demonstrated commitment to the program through timely communication, participation in all activities and meetings and demonstrated willingness and initiative to assist the Teen Leader Coordinator. Three Teen Leaders graduated from the program and are enrolled in college. Two of Girls Quest’s graduating Teen Leaders were featured in the “18 under 18” awards profile in the June 2009 issue of Athena magazine for girls, honoring 18 young leaders.
